An Architectural Shift: Steamboat Springs Modern Mountain Style Homes

Steamboat Springs locals and loyalists are proud of Steamboat’s genuine western charm and ranching roots. Our western heritage is as much of the town’s charm as the beauty of the mountains and open spaces. For many years the popular decorating theme has been the ‘authentic rustic western’ look of log beds, Indian rugs, wrought iron lamps etc. A signature of the old west and remote mountain living which many visitors expect to fulfill their fantasy of being in the remote Colorado, Rocky Mountains.

What I have noticed in the past several years is a shift, or rather an attraction from the traditional ‘old west’ décor to a more modern and contemporary style aptly named ‘mountain modern’. Homeowners are creating spaces which are more in line with their personal taste and lifestyle; either for a home-away from home feel or a for an every day living and lifestyle choice.

The décor is clean, minimal and sophisticated yet the home still feels warm and cozy. You know your in the Mountains of Steamboat Springs because you can see them from almost every room in the house.

This home on Old Dairy Lane is also a good example of modern mountain design where the rooms flow from living to dining and indoors to outdoors. Open plans for entertaining and family living, maximizing the number of windows to take advantage of the incredible views, natural light and sun catching southerly aspect.

Incorporating natural timbers such as the hardwood stairs to create a more natural look rather than using cowboy and Indian motifs that have been so popular in the past.

The modern mountain style is also proving very popular with guests in the vacation rental market. The shift in design and decorating style is evident in many new developments in Steamboat Springs such as The Olympian, Edgemont, and Howelsen Place.
